For the Long Beach Poly football team it was all about getting their run game and senior Mike Mauai going, and the Jackrabbits did just that as they defeated Cabrillo, 49-0 Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Mauai was a workhorse for Poly (5-1, 3-0) scoring three touchdowns as he ran for 167 yards on 18 carries.
“It felt great to come out and play with my brothers,” Mauai said. “I just love this moment, I was just thinking about how I was doing last year and how I was handling business.”
Poly’s All-American and Florida commit senior quarterback Matt Corral only played the first half but made it count as he went 5-for-10 for 147 yards and three touchdowns.
Corral’s longest completion of the night was an 86-yard touchdown pass to Kejuan Markham.
Markham accounted for the Jackrabbits’ first touchdown when he took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown.
In the second half, Poly brought rotated quarterbacks putting freshman Jacob Garcia in for the third quarter and junior Griffin Paler in the fourth.
For Cabrillo (0-5, 0-2) the team couldn’t get anything going on offense as Poly’s defense stifled their running game and held them to less than 100 yards.
